Jaivet Ealom | Abbas Nazari
2021 marked twenty years since Australia sent the Special Air Service to board MV Tampa to repel desperate refugees and a horrified Norwegian sea captain. Abbas Nazari (After the Tampa) was aboard, ended up in New Zealand and is now a Fulbright scholar. Jaivet Ealom (Escape from Manus) fled the brutal dictatorship in Myanmar only to languish in Australia’s notorious Manus Regional Processing Centre for years. He became the only person to escape. They talk about the real consequences of Australia’s dark actions.

Jaivet Ealom
Jaivet Ealom was born in Myanmar and now resides in Canada, where he has become a prominent spokesman for the Rohingya community. He is studying at Toronto University and works for a company that provides software to non-profit organisations.
Abbas Nazari
Abbas Nazari and his family were resettled as refugees in New Zealand after being rescued by the MV Tampa in 2001 after their boat capsized on the high seas. In 2019, Abbas was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the United States, where he attained a Masters in Security Studies from Georgetown University. After the Tampa is his first book.
